GENERAL INFORMATION

To increase efficiency in the business development, planning, and construction areas and in recognition of the need to create a comprehensive approach to providing development services, the City of Maryville created the Development Services Department.  The creation of this department facilitates the coordination of all planning and development activities within the City.  All of the services provided by the department are designed to support balanced and innovative development within the City and provide for future growth.  The main goal of the department is to protect and strengthen the community and neighborhoods while also encouraging business and real estate development that will enlarge our tax base, create and retain jobs, and provide for high quality developments that will enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Maryville. 

There are six operational divisions within the department to better serve the community: Economic Development, Current Planning, Long-Range Planning, Codes Enforcement, Special Projects and Data Analysis/Mapping. 

Economic Development Division - The Economic Development Division offers assistance to local expanding and/or renovating businesses assisting them through the development process.  The division also facilitates the efforts of companies interested in doing business in the City of Maryville by providing demographic information and/or research, providing information on newly approved sites, and offering City-liaison services throughout the permitting process. 

Current Planning Division -The Current Planning Division ensures that changes to the community's physical environment comply with all applicable land development policies.  The division reviews development proposals, codes and ordinances, and policies to ensure consistency with City policy and land development code requirements.

Long-Range Planning Division - The Long-Range Planning Services Division conducts studies, produces plans, identifies program needs, and develops policies that promote the physical, economic, and social development of the community.  The division advances the orderly growth of the community through long-range land use planning; environmental planning, small area planning, and corridor planning.

Codes Enforcement Division - The Codes Enforcement Division is responsible for permitting all phases of residential and commercial construction including new construction, renovations, additions, and accessory structures.  The division ensures that construction and development practices are in accordance with the adopted building codes. 

Special Projects - The Special Projects Division provides staff services and support for projects as assigned by the City Manager and City Council including annexation packages and schedules, city-owned property inventory, and census participation.  The division also serves as staff support to the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals through the development of agendas and the provision of minutes.

Data Analysis/Mapping - The Data Analysis/Mapping Division develops databases and map layers to meet departmental application and data analysis needs.  Working with the city's GIS Manager, the division maintains and updates as necessary the city's zoning map, boundary map, annexation map and any other mapping necessary support to department projects.
