A Solid Waste employee collects residential garbage.

Just a reminder...all residential garbage must be bagged.  You may use shopping bags, garbage bags or any bag that can be tied off.

Solid Waste Frequently Asked Questions

1)   Q I just moved to a new house. How do I get a new garbage container?
A

Typically the builder or contractor has paid for a new container along with the permit fees. If payment has been made, the Solid Waste Division will deliver a new container once you have spent the night in your new house. We will not deliver a new container to a vacant house due to theft and vandalism reasons.

If the builder or contractor has not made payment for a new container, the new owner is responsible for payment. There is a $70 one-time maintenance fee for a new container that can be paid at the Customer Service Department in the Municipal Center.  You may call 273-3302 to verify if payment has already been made.

2)   Q How do I get a second garbage container?
A

There is a one-time maintenance fee of $70 for a second additional container. Payment can be made at the Customer Service Department at the Municipal Center. Once payment has been received, your new container will be delivered within one day to one week at the very most.

If you should move from your house to another house within the City limits, you may take the 2nd container to your new house. Each container has a serial number that assigns the container to each address.  The serial numbers are critical to our inventory, including finding lost or stolen containers. Please call us at 273-3302 to let us know if you move the 2nd container to another house so that we may update our inventory.

3)   Q My garbage container is missing or has been stolen. What do I do?
A
Please call 273-3302. There are serial numbers on each container that are assigned to a specific address. The Sanitation Supervisor will investigate and notify you when the issue has been resolved.
4)   Q How do I get my garbage container repaired?
A

Please call the Solid Waste Division at 273-3302. It is our responsibility to maintain your container. You will be asked to place the container in the yard where it can be seen from the road. Please do not leave the container at the road to avoid theft and vandalism. The container will be repaired within one day to one week at the most. We will return the container on the same day that we collected it for service repair.

In the meantime, you may continue to place garbage in the container until we collect it for repair. If the container is out for service repair on your garbage collection day, then we will collect your garbage in bags at that time.

5)   Q How do I get commercial garbage service?
A
Please call the Sanitation Supervisor at 273-3302 to verify specific qualifications for commercial garbage service.
6)   Q How do I dispose of chemical hazardous waste?
A
Keep Blount Beautiful is an organization that collects chemical hazardous waste semiannually. For more information, please call 681-4809.
7)   Q Can I get a trailer for brush, junk or remodeling?
A

Yes.  Citizens may rent a swa-car trailer for brush, bulk rubbish and other collection services inside the corporate limits of the City of Maryville.  An invoice will be mailed to you separately from your utility bill for the rental fee.

The rental rate for a swa-car trailer for brush and bulk rubbish is $100 per weekend.  The trailer will be delivered by noon on Friday and picked up by 10:00 a.m. the following Monday.  Each additional day will be an additional charge of $40 per day. Click here for the brush-bulk swa-car agreement.

The rental rate for a swa-car trailer for demolition or house remodeling is a set fee of $150 plus tipping fee for a maximum of four days.  Each additional day will be an additional charge of $40 per day. Click here for the demolition-remodeling swa-car agreement.

To rent a swa-car trailer, please call 273-3302.  They are subject to availability and schedule.

8)   Q What is the bulk and brush collection procedure?
A

The bulk and brush collection is a monthly service for citizens to dispose of large items, junk items and brush from their house. The City is separated into four collection zones on an assigned schedule. Each zone lasts approximately one week long. To find out what zone you are in, you may check the color-coded decal on your garbage container or call us at 273-3302.

It is important to place all of your bulk and brush at the curb THE DAY BEFORE your zone actually begins. If you place items at the curb during your zone collection and the truck has already serviced your street, it will not back track. You will have to remove your items from the curb. The earliest that you may place items at the curb is no more than 3 days before your zone actually begins. Noncompliance with this ordinance may result in a fine by City code enforcement.

The types of items that we collect are appliances, furniture, TV's, computers, junk items, and cardboard. Cardboard boxes must be emptied and flattened out. We do not collect construction, remodeling, building materials or chemical hazardous waste. An example of chemical hazardous waste is a can of paint in liquid form. If the paint is dried completely to a solid, then we can collect it. The landfill requires us to separate the items. So, you may notice that different items are collected on different days. This may vary each month due to volume, traffic and landfill conditions.

Please separate the items at the curb and place tree limbs with the ends facing the street. Please make sure bulk and brush are not blocked by anything such as utility poles, transformer boxes, fences, fire hydrants or vehicles. There are many other items that we collect that are not listed on the website. Please call 273-3302 should you have any questions.
