Meet Maryville Archivist Mark BennettMark is a Maryville native who took an interest in history early on in his life when he began looking into his family’s genealogy.
Through that research, he learned that he’s a 7th great-nephew, on his mother’s side, of John Sevier, one of the founding fathers of the State of Tennessee. As if that weren't enough to pique his interest, he also learned that his father is a second cousin to Jeane Kirkpatrick, the first female U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. |
His enthusiasm for genealogy led him to research the lineage of other local families, and it sparked important dialogue between him and many Maryville elders whose stories gave Mark's research more direction.
He is the author of two books on local history — the Official Record Book of Grandview Cemetery, published in 2014, and the Official Record Book of Smith Funeral Home and Cremation Service, published in 2017.
He holds a Master of Information Sciences degree from the University of Tennessee and also serves as Blount County Historian.
His current research projects include an extensive survey of the history of Downtown Maryville, along with deed analysis on many historic properties around town. He is the steward of the city’s analog and digital archives and is the community’s go-to source for local historic information.
