Project FAQs

City of Maryville Engineering and Public Works has established this page to update the community about the Carpenter's Grade road improvement project. Additional information will be added through the project completion.
For more information, contact the Engineering and Public Works Department | 865-273-3500

The Carpenters Grade corridor project will improve a main corridor in the community – it will add a traffic signal at the busy Cochran/ Raulston/ Carpenters/ Peterson intersection, widen lanes for two-way traffic, provide better storm drainage and provide a multi-use (walking and bike) path – all to improve the safety of the stretch of road that sees over 11,000 vehicles a day traveling through Blount County and the city of Maryville.

Status Update
Phase I - Current Activity

  • Utility relocation work continues
  • Removal of stumps and debris
  • Grading of the walking trail begins
  • No roads closed or detoured
  • Police presence will be increased for safety reasons
Planned activity for May 15 - 31 – No rerouting or closed roads are expected during the next two weeks. However, drivers may encounter occasional short-term flagging operations as crews work to relocate utilities.

Find information about stakes and flags along the project corridor.

Phase I - Mid-June – Early-July

  • Cochran Road on the Raulston side closed
Picture
During this phase, Cochran Road will be realigned at Raulston Road. By the end of the project, a new traffic signal will be installed at this intersection which will improve safety and traffic flow for Cochran Rd, Raulston Rd, Peterson Rd, and Carpenters Grade.

This will require Cochran Road to be closed at the Raulston Road end for a period beginning in mid-June to early-July.
The other side of Cochran will remain open.

Phase II - Upon completion of Phase I

  • Raulston Road detoured to Cochran Road
  • Carpenters Grade remains open
Picture
After phase one is complete, for about three months, Raulston Road traffic will be detoured to Cochran Road. This closure will allow construction crews to widen Raulston Rd near the intersection with Carpenters Grade. Both lanes will remain open on Carpenters Grade.

Phase III - late summer 2025 to spring 2026

  • Northbound Carpenters Grade traffic detoured to Cochran Road
  • Southbound Carpenters Grade remains open
  • Temporary traffic light installed at Cross Creek Drive and Carpenters Grade Road
Picture
Once phase two is completed, northbound Carpenters Grade traffic will use Cochran Road. Southbound Carpenters Grade will remain open.
Time frame estimate is late summer 2025 to spring 2026.

Project Completion - expected by year end 2026
