Political/ Election Signs Information

The following information is intended to make all candidates and campaign managers aware of the established sign ordinances regarding the location of political signs as outlined in the Maryville Municipal Code. 
 
Location
  1. Section 14-218 (14) (n) and (o) states that temporary signs (including campaign signs) are permitted in the City’s right-of-way (not Federal or State right-of-way) so long as the signs are at least ten (10) feet from the edge of the pavement or back of the curb.
  2. No signs are allowed to be located in the median of any road. 
  3. No signs shall be placed upon any City-owned property at any time. This includes the Municipal Center, the greenbelt, city parks, city schools, and other city properties. However, signs may be placed upon the Municipal Center property or on other city properties on election day at voting centers only. 
  4. Signs cannot be attached to a public utility pole or any public street sign within Maryville city limits.
  5. Campaign signs are prohibited in the rights-of-way on the following State and Federal highways that are within Maryville city limits:
           
  • U.S. Highway 129 Bypass/ State Route 115
  • U.S. Highway 321/ East and West Lamar Alexander Pkwy/ State Route 73
  • U.S. Highway 411/ East and West Broadway Ave/ State Route 33
  • U.S. Highway 411/ Sevierville Road/ State Route 35
  • State Route 33 from U.S. Highway 411 at entrance to Rambling Acres Subdivision to Sundance Road and West Broadway Avenue; from West Broadway Avenue at Sundance Road to East Broadway Avenue at Cusick Street; and along East Broadway Avenue at Cusick Street to Horn Street.
  • State Route 35 from Washington Street at Alcoa City Limit to High Street; from High Street to Sevierville Road; from Sevierville Road to City Limit at Swanee Drive.
  • State Route 335 (William Blount Drive) from U.S. Highway 321 to City Limit; from U.S. Highway 411 South to City Limit.
  • State Route 335 (Old Glory Road) from U.S. Highway 321 to City Limit.
  • State Route 336 (Montvale Road) from West Lamar Alexander Parkway to City Limit.
  • State Route 446 (Foothills Mall Drive) from U.S. Highway 129 to West Lamar Alexander Parkway.
  • State Route 447 (Washington Street) from Jones Avenue to High Street.
 
Size
Section 14-218 (5) (a) (iv) regulates the placement of election and political campaign signs. No such sign may exceed sixteen (16) square feet in surface area.  
 
Removal
It is the responsibility of candidates to remove their campaign signs within three (3) days following the election.
 
Miscellaneous
  1. The use of banners as a campaign sign is prohibited per ordinance. In addition, the use of pennants, streamers, air-inflated displays or air-powered displays at any business, and commercial advertising flags is prohibited as well.
  2. Please refrain from driving stakes and poles near any intersection where there is a traffic light. There are underground circuits that could be damaged with a cost of $10,000 to $50,000 because the entire circuit loop must be replaced. The candidate will be liable for the cost of repair. 
  3. Any sign in violation of the City Code will be removed by City of Maryville personnel and then stored at the Maryville Municipal Center at 400 West Broadway Avenue.
