Where Hard Work Leads to Opportunity When Matthew Stewart joined City of Maryville in 2021, he was searching for something stable that could provide long-term opportunities for his family. Although it meant taking an entry-level position with lower pay, he believed the City offered a future he could grow into. Matthew started in Grounds Maintenance during leaf season before moving to the Street Department asphalt crew, where he learned new skills, earned his CDL, and continued pursuing opportunities to grow. Today, he serves as a Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader, helping oversee mowing operations and supporting crews across the city. Looking back, Matthew says taking the chance on the City was one of the best decisions he could have made. “I knew that if I came in with a good work ethic and worked hard, I could move up.” His story reflects how determination, patience, and consistency can turn an entry-level opportunity into a meaningful long-term career.

City of Maryville, Public Works Where Hard Work and Dedication are Recognized Brad Hurst joined City of Maryville in 1996 in an entry-level sanitation position and built a career that has now spanned nearly 30 years. Over time, he grew from working on the back of a sanitation truck to becoming a driver, crew leader, and eventually Assistant Public Works Director. One of the accomplishments Brad is most proud of was helping lead the City’s transition to automated garbage collection, a change that improved operations citywide. Today, Brad helps oversee solid waste, streets, and grounds maintenance operations while supporting employees across the department. He says the lessons he learned early on taught him humility, teamwork, and the importance of continuing to grow. "I’m honored to be where I am today and to work alongside this team. I’ve had some great mentors that helped me along the way." For Brad, what started as one opportunity became a career built through leadership, service, and teamwork.

Where the Outdoors is your Office Space Chris Clapp joined City of Maryville in 2024 after years of owning his own landscaping business. Although he earned a college degree, he knew desk work was never for him. He preferred being outdoors, working with equipment, and doing something different every day. Chris started helping with leaf removal and seasonal cleanup before moving to the asphalt crew, where he quickly advanced into a leadership role. Today, he serves as a Heavy Equipment Operator, helping with road repairs, storm cleanup, and emergency response operations throughout the city. For Chris, one of the biggest changes was gaining stability and benefits for the first time. “Before working for the City, I’d never had benefits or vacation days. I was 39 years old and had never taken a vacation day.” What started as a new job quickly became a career built on growth, teamwork, and opportunity.
