Nathan Zirges
Police Corporal, Maryville Police Department
Recently, I responded to a call where Officer McKeel and Corporal Zirges were attempting to serve an Order of Protection. The situation had the potential to escalate quickly—the male involved had locked and barricaded himself inside a bedroom, and it was unclear whether he had access to weapons.
Corporal Zirges took the lead in communicating with the individual, calmly speaking with him through the closed door for an extended period of time. Relying on his crisis intervention training and his naturally patient demeanor, he was able to slowly build rapport and de‑escalate the situation.
Ultimately, the man came out peacefully, was served with the Order of Protection, and even made arrangements for someone to pick him up. By the end of the encounter, he was casually talking with Corporal Zirges, a clear sign of how effectively the situation had been handled.
What Corporal Zirges accomplished that day required real skill and professionalism. I have many more years of experience than he does, and I can honestly say I’m not sure I could have achieved the same outcome. His actions reflect a maturity and competency well beyond his years and are a credit to both him and the department.

Recognizing Gavin Scruggs and Patty Feck, A True Team Effort
Gavin Scruggs, Systems Operational Technology Administrator, IT Department
Patty Feck, Benefits and Employee Programs Coordinator, Administrative Services
Transitioning to MUNIS software presented challenges across the organization, and for Human Resources, one of the final challenges was benefits management. This effort required deep technical expertise, detailed benefits knowledge, persistence, and collaboration, and Gavin Scruggs and Patty Feck delivered on all fronts.
Working together on the mechanism that automatically sends medical, dental, and vision benefits information to the carriers so that everyone is continuously covered, Gavin and Patty navigated a steep learning curve. Both were new to the process, yet they partnered closely to build a solution that met vendor requirements and functioned seamlessly within MUNIS. The project involved extensive research, trial and error, coding challenges, and coordination with vendors.
Gavin’s technical expertise, curiosity, and determination were instrumental in developing and testing the complex demographic and coverage files, while Patty’s benefits knowledge, carrier relationships, and dedication ensured requirements were clearly understood and communicated. Together, they bridged the gap between IT systems and benefits administration.
Thanks to their teamwork, employees now have a single, streamlined platform through ESS, and HR no longer maintains duplicate systems. Their perseverance, teamwork, and positive attitude turned an incredibly difficult project into a successful outcome. This was a true example of cross‑department collaboration at its best.
