​Maryville Municipal Planning Commission

The Maryville Municipal Planning Commission consists of seven members, five selected by the Mayor, a legislative representative (City Council), and the Mayor or designee. The commission makes recommendations to City Council on plans, goals, and objectives related to the growth and development of the city. In addition, the commission is responsible for approving the subdivision of land within the city. They also validate decisions of the Downtown Design Review Board. The commission meets on the third Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

The Maryville Board of Zoning Appeals is a quasi-judicial board that hears requests for variances, special exceptions, and appeals from any order, decision, or interpretation of this ordinance or the zoning map made by an administrative official in carrying out the duties of his/her office. The board consists of five members appointed by the mayor, and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Historic Zoning Commission

The Historic Zoning Commission reviews all plans for construction, alteration, repair, rehabilitation, and relocation or demolition of any structure in the historic zones, regardless of whether a permit is required. Any decisions regarding zoning and zoning boundaries are recommendations to the Maryville Planning Commission. The Historic Zoning Commission is comprised of seven members, including a representative of a local patriotic or historical organization, an architect, if available, and a member of the Maryville Planning Commission. The board meets on the second Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Historic Zoning District Information

All alterations and/or additions to property in the Historic District must be reviewed by the Historic Zoning Commission (HZC) except in-kind repairs. The Historic Zoning Commission meets the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Downtown Design Review Board

The Downtown Design Review Board is an ad hoc, advisory committee to the Maryville Planning Commission that assists in creating guidelines and standards for downtown development and reviews all conceptual plans for construction, alteration, repair, rehabilitation, and relocation or demolition of any structure in the downtown districts for compliance with those standards. The board consists of nine members appointed by the mayor, including a representative of a local patriotic or historical organization, an architect, if available, and a member of the planning commission. The board meets on the second Monday of the month at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Zoning Regulations for the Downtown Zones

 

Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals

The Construction Board of Appeals shall have the power, to hear appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official and consider variances of the technical codes. The board consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor.  Such board members should be composed of individuals with knowledge and experience in the technical codes, such as design professionals, contractors or building industry representatives. In addition to the regular members, there should be two alternate members, one member at large from the building industry and one member at large from the public. A board member shall not act in a case in which he has a personal or financial interest.

Tree Board

The goal of the Maryville Tree Board is to handle the planting, removing, or any concerns regarding “Street Trees” which consists of trees, shrubs, bushes, and all other woody vegetation on land lying between property lines on either side of all streets, avenues, or ways within the City; and “Park Trees” which includes public parks and all other areas owned by the City to which the public has free access such as a parks, trails, pocket parks, or civic gardens. The board is established also as a requirement by the National Arbor Foundation to continue to be a part of the organization’s annual Tree City program. The board consists of five members who are appointed by the Mayor.

Maryville Public Building Authority

The goal of the Maryville Building Authority is to oversee projects such the construction, acquisition, enlargement, repair and renovation of public buildings such as schools or government buildings, roads, sidewalks or any such undertaking that is declared to be for public use and essential to the public interest.
