Maryville Codes Enforcement is responsible for the administration and enforcement of regulations that govern the occupancy, use, and construction or renovation of new and existing buildings. Compliance with codes is achieved through pre-submittal review meetings with designers, plan review, permit issuance, inspections, and enforcement coordination with other city departments. The City is dedicated to quality and applies the standards for utilities and facilities so that all Maryville structures are safe, sanitary, and fit for occupancy, as well as suitable for those with physical impairments.   
Low ISO ratings mean lower insurance rates for residents, businesses and industry.

New Codes Adoption Announcement
 
On December 2, 2025, the Maryville City Council completed the process for the adoption of several new building and property maintenance codes with local modifications. The following are the newly adopted codes that will become effective on January 1, 2026:
 
· 2024 International Building Code and Appendices A and B (includes reference for
  Accessibility- ICC/ANSI A117.1 -2017 Edition);
· 2024 International Residential Code Chapters 1-23, 25 – 33, 44 and Appendices BA and BO;
· 2024 International Mechanical Code;
· 2024 International Energy Conservation Code;
· 2024 International Plumbing Code; 
· 2024 International Fire Code; and
· 2024 Property Maintenance Code.
 
Although not updated at this time, the previously adopted 2017 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code will continue to be enforced.
 
Additionally, the City previously adopted prosecutorial procedures and more severe penalties under T. C. A. §6-54-1001 et seq for violations of construction and property maintenance codes.
Portions of or all of other codes and standards may apply if specifically referenced by one of the adopted codes.
