Police Department

The Maryville Police Department will protect, preserve, and defend the lives, property and rights of all people, while serving with honesty, integrity and sound judgement.

The Maryville Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). 
and the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police sanctioned Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (TLEA).

The Unit is a specialized unit with the responsibility of conducting thorough investigations of serious crimes or repeated offenses which are complex in nature or require special expertise. The division handles about 500 criminal investigations each year. The following outlines some of the duties of the investigators in the detective unit.
  • Death by violent or suspicious nature
  • Robbery
  • Sexual assault
  • Crimes against children
  • Kidnapping or hostage taking
  • Aggravated assaults
  • Burglaries
  • Property crimes resulting in substantial loss
The Unit is also responsible for the investigation of vice and/or organized crime rings. The investigators additionally gather intelligence and maintain files on matters dealing with on-going criminal activity or issues concerning Homeland Security. Investigators also work closely with the District Attorney General's office on the prosecution of criminal cases through the court system.

Equipped with a mobile evidence lab, investigators are able to collect and process forensic evidence which can be forwarded to the TBI's crime lab for further analysis. Investigators also have technical surveillance equipment available that enhances their ability to collect audio and video evidence. Each investigator's vehicle is equipped with evidence collection equipment to assist in the collection and preservation of forensic evidence.

Fingerprinting and Background Services

Fingerprinting and background investigations for employers on prospective employees can be conducted by the detective unit. 
This unit also provides these services on
 applicants for permits and licenses through the City.  ​

Expertise

Various members of the Detective Division serve as liaison with many multi-disciplinary teams including:

  • Child Investigative Protective Team
  • Child Fatality Review Team
  • Death Investigation Review Team
  • Arson Investigation Task Force
  • Auto Theft Task Force
  • Scrap Metal Task Force
The Detective Division is comprised of a captain, a lieutenant, a detective sergeant and three investigators. Each member has expertise in certain fields of criminal investigation including:

  • Latent fingerprint collection
  • DNA collection
  • Video enhancement
  • Interview and interrogation
  • Clandestine labs
  • Fraudulent/forged documents.
