Each year approximately 6 million dogs and cats enter shelters nationwide. Roughly half of those will be euthanized, not due to poor health or aggression issues but simply due to lack of resources. At the Maryville Alcoa Animal Rescue Center, we are committed to saving these innocent lives, all of them - not just 50% of them. We believe every animal deserves a chance at life. Our dedicated team of volunteers works around the clock caring for every animal that enters our system with not only housing, feeding, cleaning, and vetting, but with training, love, and socialization.

Today is Giving Tuesday, and the cats and dogs of Blount County need your help! Can you help support MAARC, our 100% volunteer-run organization with a tax-deductible gift today? Just $9.70 provides a day of care for one homeless pet.

Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales Coming to Maryville

The iconic Budweiser Clydesdales will make an appearance at the Food City in Maryville on Thursday, December 2, 2021, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1715 W. Broadway Ave. The eight horses will be hitched to their famous red beer wagon and will be joined by a Dalmatian, and their driver.
The original Clydesdale team of horses was a gift from the Busch brothers, August and Adolphus to their father in celebration of the end of Prohibition in 1933.
In the 1950’s Dalmatians were trained to guard the wagon when the driver stepped away to make deliveries to his customers. Today, the dogs serve as a companion and friend to the horses.
The first Anheuser-Busch Super Bowl commercial featuring the Clydesdales was aired in 1986. Since then, more than 25 of the commercials that provoke us to think about life’s greatest moments have elevated Super Bowl Sundays.
To be selected as a Budweiser Clydesdale, horses must be at least 17 hands or 6’ tall at the shoulder and weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 lbs. They must have a black tail and mane, a white blaze face, and four white feet.
The public is invited to come out to witness the grandeur of the Clydesdales right here in Maryville on Thursday evening between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

City of Maryville to Assess the Health of Streams

11/4/2021

Picture
The City of Maryville will be conducting a stream survey and inventory of stormwater discharge within the Maryville city limits. This survey includes portions of the Brown Creek, Culton Creek, Duncan Branch, Gallagher Creek, Lackey Creek, Laurel Bank Branch, Peppermint Branch, Pistol Creek, and Springfield Branch watersheds. This assessment is one of the requirements to allow Maryville to obtain its National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Phase II permit. The goal of this project is to gain a better understanding of the health of Maryville’s streams. Areas that may benefit from stream restoration or stormwater infrastructure repair will also be identified.

The city has contracted with Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) to perform the fieldwork for this study. CEC environmental scientists will be traversing all the major streams to photograph and document their condition. Streambank erosion sites, undercut pipes, unshaded stream sections, trash dumps, and other areas of environmental concern will be assessed. Field staff will only record the condition of the streams. They are not present to remedy or address any potential problems.

For more information, call the City of Maryville Stormwater Program Manager, Dale Jayne (865) 273-3512, or email Dale at [email protected].

A Section of East Harper Ave. is Closed for Repairs

11/4/2021

City of Maryville Engineering and Public Works announced beginning today, Thursday, November 4, 2021, the bridge on East Harper Ave. between Wright Road and Griffitt Street will be closed for repairs, following a regulatory inspection by TDOT. East and Westbound traffic will be detoured to E. Broadway via Cumberland Street and Everett Avenue. Residents will have access to their homes along East Harper Avenue.

Update 12/6/21
A structural engineer, Volkert Engineering, Inc. has been contracted to survey and inspect the bridge this week. Design work for the repairs will take approximately one month to complete. The City will then select a contractor to begin repairs. This process could take approximately three months depending on the extent of the needed repairs. Once the repair work is complete, TDOT will reinspect the bridge and approve the repairs prior to reopening. The complete process is expected to take at least six months but could take longer due to strains  - including supply chain, staffing and COVID-related issues.

For more information call the City of Maryville Engineering and Public Works Department at (865) 273-3500.
