Plans to improve the pedestrian connection from the Maryville College campus to downtown Maryville through improved walkability, lighting, and beautification will get underway this June.
Assistant Public Services Director, Kevin Stoltenberg explained, “The main goal of the project is to connect the Maryville College campus with the heart of downtown Maryville. The new sidewalks and plaza space will make walking from campus to downtown easier and safer.”
Southern Constructors, LLC will be working to replace sidewalks, reconstruct crosswalks, install a new landscaping package, and decorative lighting. Other efforts include underground utilities from Ellis Avenue to High Street.
The work will begin the week of June 1. Stoltenberg said, “The project was designed carefully to avoid disruptions to business or access to homes. However, there will be lane closures at various times.”
Traffic may be diverted to one lane at times during the project, but there will always be access for local traffic. On-street parking will be limited. Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. as weather permits. Work is expected to continue through November.
The project is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance the downtown area and connect businesses, residents, students and visitors to the growing downtown community.
