Two Maryville residents have alerted the City about scammers offering to lower their utility bills and taking payment over the phone. These scammers have asked for personal information and debit/credit card information while pretending to discount the customer’s utility bill by a large percentage.

The caller claims to be with the city and demands immediate payment of a delinquent utility account or face disconnection of services.
No government official will contact a citizen to demand immediate payment or to threaten them. No government or utility will ever take a payment in the form of a gift card. Scammers use fear tactics to persuade people to forward money urgently. The received text claims to come from law enforcement personnel – in at least one instance, the Chief of Police. The text demands immediate payment or face jail time. The scammers may continue to harass the person if the text is ignored.

Citizens should be advised that the City will never call a customer to pay their bill. The City will also never demand a payment prior to being cut off. The process for electricity service cut off is as follows: You will receive your normal bill via the United States Postal Service. If late, a late fee will be assessed, and a second "cut-off notice" will be mailed via USPS letting you know a cut-off date has been schedule. If the bill has not been paid by that date, service will be cut off. No one will ever call and demand payment. Customers who receive threatening calls demanding payment should report it immediately to customer service at 865-273-3456 or alert the police at their non-emergency dispatch number 983-3620. |
