City of Maryville Loose Leaf Collection Begins October 15

9/28/2021

Comments

Picture
The city of Maryville’s fall loose leaf collection begins on Friday, October 15 in the red zone and will continue through the end of the year. Leaf pickup operates on the same schedule as brush and junk collection. Crews will be in each zone for one planned pickup per month until the fall leaf pickup is complete.

The final opportunity to have leaves at the curb to be picked up for the winter will be January 2. One additional leaf pickup will be scheduled in the spring.

Loose leaves should be placed in the front lawn close to the curb. Do not place leaves in the street, a ditch, or a drainage system because they can clog up storm drains and cause street flooding. For more information visit our website at www.maryvillegov.com or call 273-3302.

City of Maryville Police and Fire Departments to Conduct Training at Former Sears Location

9/16/2021

Visitors to Foothills Mall may notice some uniformed activity in the month of September – but there is no need for alarm. It’s only a drill.

The former Sears location was offered up for training to Maryville’s public safety teams by the current owners – CMH Properties, LLC – during the month of September in advance of the building’s scheduled demolition.

“This is an incredible opportunity for us to be able to train inside a retail structure that is similar to many others in our community,” said Chief Tony Crisp, Maryville Public Safety Director. “Not only will we have the opportunity to practice our skills; we will also have practical experience with the challenges buildings like this might pose and be better prepared to respond in an emergency.”

Maryville Police will conduct K-9 and SWAT training September 16 and 18, and Maryville Fire will use the facility the last two weeks of September. Activity will include the use of smoke machines for simulated fire rescue drills as well as other emergency responder skills training and extrication and rescue tools practice. There may also be some “flash bang” noises used during the drills, but most activity will be contained within the walls of the building.

No exterior walls will be broken, but visitors to the mall may notice activity around the building and potentially see smoke from the smoke machines. All mall tenants have been notified of the plans.

“We are so appreciative of the opportunity CMH Properties has given us to practice using critical rescue tools and skills,” said Crisp. “This training will provide valuable assistance to us as we perform our duties to the community.”

For more information about the training, contact Maryville Police at 865-273-3700.

The Maryville-Alcoa Animal Rescue Center (MAARC) is a 501c3 founded in 2018 with the vision of creating a No-Kill environment in Alcoa and Maryville while partnering with the City of Maryville Police Department Animal Shelter. MAARC’s founding principle is to find every animal a safe and happy forever home.

Currently MAARC relies 100% on volunteers and operates with an annual budget of under $200,000. They take in animals from the City of Maryville shelter on Home Avenue and care for them until they are adopted. In the past year MAARC served over 570 dogs and cats in our community.

The dedicated team of volunteers at MAARC works around the clock caring for every animal that enters the shelter. Volunteers work tirelessly to provide not only housing, food, clean cages, and vet visits, but training, love, and socialization as well. MAARC provides everything needed to get the forgotten and abandoned animals ready for their forever home. Due to efforts like these the City of Maryville Animal Shelter has proudly maintained a 95% or better save-rate over the last 5 years.

On October 22, 2021, MAARC is hosting a Masquerade Ball fundraiser at the historic Capitol Theatre in downtown Maryville. The goal for the evening is to raise $25,000. Your financial support will be used to house local homeless animals, provide their vet care, and to spay and neuter every animal that comes into their care.

Individual Tickets will be $75 or purchase a table of 8 for $500.

Your organization can also amplify fundraising efforts by being an event Corporate Sponsor. In this role, your business chooses the Tier of Sponsorship you prefer. In turn, MAARC promotes your involvement in print advertising, online on their website and social media platforms and at the event.

The Tiers of Sponsorship:
  • Animal Angel $5,000
  • Animal Guardian $2,500
  • Animal Steward $1,000

The evening will also include a silent auction and an online auction as well.

By supporting MAARC financially at the Masquerade Ball you will directly affect their efforts to continue to serve Blount County well and help to save the lives of countless dogs and cats in the coming year.

Please join MAARC for a fun filled evening on Fri, October 22, 2021, from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre, 127 West Broadway Avenue in beautiful downtown Maryville, Tennessee.

For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit MAARC’s website at

City of Maryville Mayor Proclaims September 11, 2021 "Patriot Day" and "National Day of Service and Remembrance" in the City

As our nation remembers the twentieth anniversary of the terrorist attack on America, city of Maryville Mayor Andy White, on behalf of city council members, proclaimed September 11, 2021 as “Patriot Day” and “National Day of Service and Remembrance” in the city of Maryville.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked and crashed commercial aircraft in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands of Americans lost their lives in the attacks.

Mayor Andy White said, “As we all reflect on the events of September 11, 2001, the day American life was changed forever, we remember the heartbreaking tragedies of that day. We also remember the everyday heroes, those brave souls who faced the danger head-on, and the entire nation as we banded together in unity.”

The Mayor’s proclamation states that City Council “recognizes, commends, and will always seek to honor the selfless dedication, bravery, and sacrifice displayed as the front-line workers, first responders and volunteers who came to the aid of those in need. It pays tribute to the same qualities of those who rose to service in defense of the United States and honors the individuals who lost their lives or were injured in the attacks of September 11, 2001.”

On December 18, 2001, Congress designated September 11 as Patriot Day to be observed annually by the President of the United States. It requests flags of the United States at half-staff, and that a moment of silence be observed by Americans – many observing at 8:46 am eastern standard time – the time of the first attack at the World Trade Center. On April 21, 2009, Congress requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized “National Day of Service and Remembrance.”

The Mayor’s proclamation also calls for “all people of the city of Maryville to continue to live their lives throughout the year with the same spirit of unity, service, and compassion that was exhibited throughout the United States following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and to observe September 11, 2021 as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance” and “Patriot Day” in the city of Maryville.”

“It is important for us as a nation to remember what we have overcome together and remember our common bond as Americans and as humans,” said Mayor White. “I will never forget, and I know the citizens of the city of Maryville won’t either. Let us all join in remembrance as we observe the twentieth anniversary of 9/11.”
