Contractors were able to complete the paving on Washington Street and High Street early this morning. No further closures of Washington Street will be required. Crews will be finishing up the paving on the section of Sevierville Road (High Street) to Washington St. tomorrow night.*

Updated July 11, 2018
Contractors have rescheduled the repaving work for Washington St., High St. and Sevierville Rd. for Thursday, July 12. They hope to be able to do all repaving work in the area at one time minimizing the road closing time. This work will require a brief closure of all four lanes of Washington St. as well as High and a small section of Sevierville Road. More information will be posted as it is available.

Updated July 9, 2018 1 p.m. / 4:15 p.m.
Washington Street and High Street are now open. Washington and High will be closed for part of the day on Wednesday to complete the repair/ repaving of the surface. Otherwise, no additional closures will be required.

On the Sevierville Road side of Washington Street, High Street (which makes a Y with Sevierville Road will remain closed for the rest of the week to finish the line.

Updated July 9, 2018
Due to some complications with the sewer line work on Sunday, July 8, Washington Street will remain closed for *part* the day. We apologize for the inconvenience. The traffic plan has been changed - and local traffic is not passable at this time on Washington Street. Please follow Police directions and detours and allow extra time to get to your location. Crews are working to complete the work as soon as possible and restore normal traffic. We will post more information as it is available.

Updated July 3, 2018

Beginning July 7 at 6 p.m., Maryville Water and Sewer’s ongoing sewer line replacement project will require a section of Washington Street to be closed. Contractors will be working to replace a sewer line with manholes located in the center of Washington Street and High Street. A state-route detour is required. In order to minimize the impact on daily traffic, Portland Utilities Construction Co., LLC is planning the work from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. from Saturday, July 7 to Saturday, July 14.

The planned detour will be right on Broadway Avenue (S.R. 33) to Lamar Alexander Parkway (U.S. 321, S.R. 73)  toward the mountains and the reverse to Alcoa. High Street will be closed from Crawford Street to Sevierville Road. Routes within the detoured section will be indicated by detour signs. Local traffic will be able to access businesses on either side of High Street but will not be able to cross the intersection of Washington and High Street.

To the extent possible, depending on any complications with underground utilities, tree roots, weather, etc., contractors plan to plate and reopen the road each day from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. However, there will be some temporary daytime closures to repave the road.

For more information, contact Maryville Water & Sewer at 273-3304 or Administration at 273-3406.

Downtown Parking Garages Undergo Major Repairs Beginning Monday

6/19/2018

Comments

Updated August 15
All levels of the Harper Street Garage are now open.
Elevator work will require a work zone on W. Church Avenue beginning Tuesday, August 21. Expect flagged traffic. The entrance to the Church Avenue garage will be closed while this work is performed.

Previous: July 6 4:30 p.m.
On Monday, June 25, City contractor Joseph Construction Co. Inc. will begin extensive repair work on the City’s municipal parking garages. The most intensive work will be done at the municipal garage near Barley’s beginning July 5. Available parking at this garage will be significantly impacted for the remainder of the year.

Updated July 12
Harper Street Municipal Garage Work Timeline

The top level of the W. Harper Avenue Garage (entrance on W. Harper Avenue) will be closed from approximately June 25 until previously estimated August 5 (now August 9). The lower and two middle levels will remain open. This work is for repairs, to provide a pedestrian entrance to Broadway Avenue from the middle level, and weather seal the top level.

Municipal Parking Garage (near Barley’s) Work Timeline
The Municipal Parking Garage work is a complex structural repair and enhancement project that will impact the inside and the outside perimeter of the garage – including some street closures.

Updated: Now Monday, July 9 Originally: Beginning July 5, 2018
  • Traffic will be reduced to two lanes on W. Church Avenue at the parking garage for approximately two weeks to accommodate demolition and excavation. From July 11 - 17, Church Avenue will be open to eastbound traffic only.
  • The Church Avenue entrance to the garage will remain open during this time.
  • Traffic will be reduced to two lanes on Cusick Street between Broadway and W. Church Avenue to accommodate excavation. This traffic pattern will remain in place into August.
  • A four-way stop will be in place at W. Church Avenue and Cusick Street for the duration of the garage project.
  • The 6 a.m. - 11 a.m. loading zone on the 100 block of W. Broadway Avenue will be transitioned to a full-time loading zone so that drop-offs, deliveries and shuttle services can still operate on Broadway throughout the construction project.
  • The top level of the parking garage will be temporarily closed to allow access for storage of the traffic signal pole removed during Church St. excavation.
While Church Avenue Excavation is in Progress:
  • The two rows of parking closest to Church Avenue on the lower and 2nd levels will be closed to avoid any damage from the excavation and elevator demolition. (These will be reopened upon completion of the Church Ave work).
  • The back row of the top level of the garage will be closed for construction equipment and staging. (This will remain closed for the duration of the project.)
Updated: Beginning July 16, 2018
While Cusick Street Excavation is in Progress:
  • A section of all three floors on the Cusick side of the garage will be closed to avoid damage to vehicles from the excavation work. (This will remain closed until the excavation and fill work is completed.)
  • Beginning July 23, (previously estimated July 16) the top level of the municipal garage will be closed for approximately three months (through mid-October).
  • Broadway Avenue will remain two-way traffic, but will be reduced by one lane to accommodate excavation on W. Broadway Ave. Flagged traffic may be required.
Updated: Begins July 30 (Previous estimate: July 23, 2018)
  • Broadway Avenue will be reduced to one lane for west-bound traffic only for approximately eight weeks. East-bound traffic will be detoured at Cates Street to Church Avenue. Motorists can also use Harper Avenue as an alternative route.
Beginning July 28, 2018
  • Most of the lower two levels will be closed with the exception of a section of parking at the W. Church Avenue level. The second level is estimated to remain closed for up to six weeks. The lowest level should be closed for two weeks.

The contractor expects the entire project to be mostly complete by the end of the year, but it is highly weather-dependent. The contracted time frame is to have the majority complete in March 2019. The remaining work will be to resurface the garage in late spring when weather conditions are optimal and will be complete by the end of May 2019. An alternative parking map which shows the municipal parking lots in the downtown area is available on the City’s website at maryvillegov.com. Directional signs will also be installed to help point motorists to available parking lots.

For more information, contact Engineering and Public Works (865) 273-3500.

Maps showing traffic plans for the two phases of the Broadway Municipal Parking Garage are available to download. Phase I is the Church/Cusick portion, Phase II begins July 23 (westbound only traffic on Broadway for up to eight weeks.)

Sidewalk Work on South Cedar Street Nearing Completion

6/13/2018

Comments

City of Maryville Engineering and Public Works’ street construction crew has been working to improve drainage on South Cedar Street. Previously in place was an “asphalt swale drainage system” meant to run stormwater through a grassy ditch to the creek. However, the system was not effective and did not route water efficiently in the area. Additionally, the old sidewalks were not angled correctly and spilled stormwater into yards. The new sidewalks have been elevated to six inches in height which keeps stormwater moving down the street to the newly installed curb inlets which divert stormwater into the catch basin. Taking out the grass swale also allowed crews to widen South Cedar Street on both sides by two feet.

Aside from the drainage benefit, sidewalks have been widened by 1.5 feet making the new width 5.5 feet. This width allows for two people to walk side-by-side comfortably – improving walkability in the area.
Crew Supervisor, Tim Green said he expects the department’s portion of the project between Karrow Street and Ray Avenue to be completed by the end of June. Contractors will finish the section between Ray Avenue and Mountain View Avenue due to the various utilities in the area. Once the entire section is complete, the road will be resurfaced.

Green said, “We have already seen the benefits of this project in terms of drainage and are excited to complete it. We think the people using these sidewalks as well as the residents in the area will be very happy with the end result.”

For more information, please call the department of Engineering and Public Works (865) 273-3302.
