The City of Maryville Municipal Center, the Operation Center, and the Recycling Centers will close in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 3, 2018. All offices and the Recycling Centers will reopen on Tuesday, September 4. There will be no change in the residential garbage pickup schedules. ​

Work continues to progress on garage repairs. Structural engineers have determined the cause of the pressure on the garage walls to be a combination of settled backfill and water intrusion. Water intrusion through the porous concrete had also rusted the reinforced steel supporting the sidewalk. As the backfill settled, the sidewalk separated from the garage.

To address the issues, full excavation of the old backfill was required. The space will be filled with Geofoam, a non-settling product with the required compression strength needed to support the sidewalk. This material will exert no pressure on the garage walls. Additionally, proper waterproofing of the structure is currently in progress. These measures will correct the issues with the garage and ensure its structural integrity.

Enhancements to the garage are also underway as part of the project. A new elevator and extension of the stairs will be completed at the West Church Avenue entrance of the garage. The company that manufactured the old elevator is no longer in business – making parts for repairs expensive and difficult to obtain. An improved plaza area will also be part of the renovated structure.

“We were pleased to find the issues with the garage were not more complicated than they appeared. Upon excavation, we found the structural integrity to be sound and planned standard repairs. The contractor expects to have the majority of the project complete by the end of the year,” said Angie Luckie, Director of Public Services.

Traffic pattern
Traffic on W. Broadway Avenue is still open only to westbound traffic from Cusick Street to Cates Street. Once the Geofoam is installed, the eastbound lane will be reopened – expected early October.

Parking availability
“Visitors downtown are also discovering new parking options they may not have known about prior to the construction project. There are two additional parking facilities very close to the Broadway garage – an open lot on W. Church Avenue and a parking garage on W. Harper Avenue. An additional parking lot is also available across W. Harper Avenue from the parking garage,” said Luckie.

Repairs and improvements to the W. Harper Avenue garage were finished and all levels reopened earlier this month.

In order to help visitors find nearby parking, the City has installed a new directional and site marker sign package. The new signs are bright green with white lettering and direct motorists to the nearest parking lot depending on their location downtown. Sullivan’s Downtown continues to operate a courtesy shuttle from the Harper garage during lunch and dinner hours. The shuttle service has been well-received by visitors according to the restaurant staff.

Construction on the Broadway Parking Garage continues. On Tuesday beginning at 7 a.m., the Church Avenue entrance to the garage will be closed (no available parking). Traffic will be flagged around the work zone on Church Avenue. The contractor expects to complete this work by noon on Tuesday - reopening the garage and all lanes of traffic.

Working in conjunction with the TDOT safety improvement project at Brown School Road, the Maryville Water and Sewer department will be relocating a sewer line in the area of Brown School Road to Hardee's Restaurant. A lane shift will be required in this area starting Friday, August 17 and the following Monday, August 20 - Friday, August 24. This will be a congested area.

The TDOT project will continue through the end of the year and will have Brown School Road closed from Old Knoxville Pike to East Broadway Avenue. The project was funded by TDOT to improve safety at the intersection and includes widening Broadway and installing a traffic signal.

A section of Brown School Road from Old Knoxville Pike to E Broadway Avenue has been closed to through traffic. The TDOT project is to improve traffic safety in the area - and includes widening Broadway and adding a traffic signal. TDOT estimates the project will be completed by December 31, 2018.

Additional Information:  8-20-18
The TDOT safety improvement project will align Brown School Road at East Broadway Avenue with Eagleton Road. A conventional 4-leg traffic signal will be installed. East Broadway will be widened to accommodate left turns on both sides of the signal. The East Broadway and Brown School Road approaches will each have a left turn signal.

TDOT has contracted with Southern Constructors to complete the project. The City of Maryville will perform some utility relocations. TDOT anticipates the project will be complete by December 31, 2018.

Maryville Water & Sewer will have Windemere Circle closed from Eva Jean Drive to Belmont Drive during working hours week of August 6 - 10. They are working on sewer rehab. For more information, call 273-3304.

The City has received many calls regarding an earthquake-like event that happened just after 1 p.m. today. 

We have not found any visible evidence of a surface blast and we can confirm it was not a result of a quarry blast. Local seismographs indicate a possible earthquake. However, we do not know for sure the cause of the event. Officials from the US Geological Survey will need to make that determination. We expect to receive communication from the Emergency Management staff when the cause of the event is determined.
